blog#5
The children slowly showed up to class this morning. It seemed quiet at first, and most of the children wandered around class playing alone. One boy arrived into the classroom in a different mood. He usually arrives ready to play with the boys. Today he was having trouble communicating with his teacher about what was wrong. At one point he picked up a piece of tissue paper that the teacher had for the students to play with and started tearing it up then would throw it on the floor. He was throwing it with a lot of force and had a frown on his face as he was doing it. The teacher then asked him what was wrong. He didn't respond and started throwing more paper on the floor. It got to the point where the teacher had pick him up and take him outside of the class in order to speak to him. He began kicking so she sat with him outside until he calmed down. When he returned to class after about 10 minutes he was in a better mood. Once more children showed up to class the teacher decided for everyone to go outside to play. One activity i would create would be to have have the children make an art collage of their favorite things. I would have them bring in pictures of their families, then draw pictures of their favorite cartoons, foods, music, movies etc. They would then take turns showing it to their whole class in order to learn more about their friends.

Hey Ericka,
ReplyDeleteMy observation today was kind of very quiet, I guess due to the weather. It was drizzle and some of the children was out sick. In my class a lot of children wandered around as well and the boy that usually play soon he get to the center didnt play at all. He just sit at the block center area and being sad. The teacher ask him how he feel, he reply nothing. I dont want to play and dont want to be bother.I like you mention art collage for children to do during art activity.I know i have done it with a lot of student and they love it. They come up with a creative idea when you ask them to bring stuff from home
I am glad that the teacher continued to ask the boy what was wrong. It was also good that she took him outside so that she could speak to him in private. Sometimes all children need to feel better is to know that someone else cares about their feeling. It was good to hear that felt better after a while and was able to join the class
ReplyDeleteHi Ericka, just like you I had a child in my classroom that acted different this time, but didnt have a problem with the teacher. In my case the child just felt like he needed some alone time during the beginning of the day. However, after he went back to his usual way of doing things and engaging in cooperative play with his friends. I like your activity plan about making a collage, i am sure the children will enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI think if the child was wanting to tear up the paper maybe the teacher could have encouraged him to turn the small pieces of tissue paper into a collage. He could rip up the different colors different sizes then glue it on a piece of paper. This could help the child express some of his anger, yet be creative and hopeful get into a better mood by doing so.
